When selecting LED flood lights there are several things to consider.

What is the flood lights life span?
This is generally related to the quality of the LED`s and the designs ability to dissipate heat away from the LED`s.
Budget conscious hardware stores and E-Bay traders only care about how much profit they can make so the quality is compromised.

Lifespan of flood lights can range from 30,000 to 100,000 hours depending upon the quality.   Better quality flood lights will also be much more energy efficient.

Will your flood light handle the environment?
LED flood lights have an IP (Ingress protection) rating. The first number relates to particle size that can penetrate into the light and the second number relates to its moisture protection level. IP65 means it is basically waterproof and suitable for most outside lighting. IP67 means the light will handle a quick submersion in water, extreme humidity or torrential rainy conditions. IP68 means it is designed to be submersed in water for operation usually down to a certain depth.

What colour temperature is best for your application.

Generally speaking higher CRI (colour rendering index) levels can be achieved with warmer kelvin colour temperatures.

Colour temperature and CRI selection is an important consideration for sports lighting.

Does the flood light offer high lumen per watt efficiency?
LED`s like globes are similar in that they consume a certain amount of watts (input) to operate at normal operating levels and they output a certain amount of lumens or provide a measurable lux level.

LED technology provides very high efficiency in lumens to watts (lm/w) conversion making them cheaper to run than tradition lighting technologies. Each brand and style of LED has a lm/w efficiency but once applied to a PCB and taking into consideration the luminaries lens the efficiency of the lm/w will be lower than the rated LED chip.
When comparing flood light efficiency it is important to look at both the LED`s lm/w and the overall fittings output of lm/w. Different driver brands can also effect the efficiency of the lm/w. Colour temperature is also a factor to look at as the cooler kelvin colours will have a higher lumen output than the warmer colours.

So whats the difference between a flood light and a spot light?
Basically its the optical projection of light and can be defined as a beam angle.   Flood Lights generally light up a large area while spot lights have a more acute beam angle and can be mounted at a distance giving a defined area with a higher illumination or lux level.   This is generally achieved with either diffusion or optical lens.
